Nik Govier

, Blurred

Nik has never been afraid of failure – in fact she embraces it, knowing its lessons form the foundations for what comes next. She wears her failures with pride, openly talking about them to inspire others.

In 2018 Nik walked away from her own multi-award winning agency, Unity. A values clash with her older co-founder made it untenable, but it was incredibly hard to do – as for complex legal reasons she had to be willing to walk away with nothing to show for her 12 years of graft, despite being a 50:50 partner. Adding to this, Nik was the sole earner for a family of 4, meaning the financial pressure was profound.

But walk away she did, and 8 months on launched Blurred.global, alongside three other founding partners, a consultancy that blurs the lines between communications, management and sustainability consultancy.

Learning from Unity’s failings, Nik put values at the heart of her new business, with its first hire being an NED for People and Purpose, who would also coaching everyone fortnightly. The thinking? If her coach could get her to walk away from her own company which was on paper madness, then just imagine what could be achieved if everyone was supported in being their true best selves?

And this notion of ‘true’ forms the inclusive backbone of the BCorps, Blurred. Nik herself is neurodivergent (dyslexic/ADHD) and wanted an environment where everyone could thrive. In the same way that the company supports her and her complex family life (autism, ADHD, dyslexia, cognitive learning disorders), so she wanted the same adaptive environment for her entire team. A place where ALL can thrive, regardless of background, personal circumstance or life stage.

5 years on and the Blurred team is truly diverse and averages a 97% satisfaction rating across its anonymous employee survey.

But Blurred has also proven that People, Planet and Profit don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Blurred’s clients are mainly large multinationals and by
pushing these giants to be ever better corporate citizens, Nik knows Blurred has genuinely positively impacted the world.
